HINTS TO EXHIBITORS

BEANS should be straight, young and brittle when snapped,

BEETROOT when cut should be of deep' red colour and of tender age. Whether round or long they should all be of even size and shape, with lOOmm. of top.

MARROWS should be sufficiently tender to permit of easy puncturing by the thumb nail when tested. Small ones for table use gain more points than large ones and should be alike in shape and size. Try to retain the dead flower head at the end of each marrow and do not handle more than Is necessary:

ONIONS If harvested should be cleaned and all old scale leaves trimmed off, but do not skin them down to the pale green undersklns., When exhibited as green onions they should retain the whole of the green top and all their roots. It Is permissible to wash out all the soil from the roots and wash the bulb.

TOMATOES should be just ripe, plus the small stalk and calyx. Fully coloured for their variety. They should be of an even size. Do not handle them unduly.

POTATOES should be typical of their variety and type; i.e •• round varieties should be round and kidney varieties should be kidney shaped. Coloured ones should show their true colour and all should be unblemished when washed clean.

CARROTS should be typical of their type; i.e •• short-horn, Intermediate, or long. Young and of a rich red colour. Wash them without scratching and bunch fan-shape after trimming the foliage to lOOmm in length.

LETTUCE should have the roots Intact but well washed. Firm hearts are required and Cos lettuce may need a light tie In the centre. They should be crisp and tender, of a good colour and even size.

SHALLOTS fall into two categories, culinary and pickling.
Pickling bulbs should be no more than 30mm. diameter.
Each should be clean, trimmed of its roots and the short top folded over and tied neatly with raffia or cotton. Exhibit them on a plate of sand which has been heaped up in the centre to form a mound. Gently press each shallot into the sand.

CABBAGES. A pair should be of the same variety and of similar shape and size. Each should have a firm solid heart, leaves without blemish and of a good green colour. Savoys should not be staged in a cabbage class. All exhibits to have 100mm. of stem.

PANSIES and VIOLAS to be exhibited in a shallow dish containing damp sand or water.

For all classes a bowl is defined as being wider than it is high. A vase is higher than it is Wide.
